Helping you be ready for winter

A light dusting of snow covers a row of houses.

Britain’s energy networks are extremely reliable and resistant to winter weather. While it’s rare for your electricity or gas supply to be disrupted, it’s always good to be prepared if you ever have a power cut at home, especially during storms or severe winter weather.

Preparing for winter

Here are some tips to help you get ready for winter:

  • Follow NHS advice on staying well in winter
  • Watch out for Met Office weather warnings
  • Get your gas appliances serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • Fit a carbon monoxide alarm and test it regularly
Keep a battery-powered torch in a safe place, along with blankets and warm clothes
  • Store important contact numbers on your mobile and keep it fully charged
  • Save our emergency numbers to your phone too – it’s 105 or 0800 011 4193 for power cuts, 0800 111 999 for gas emergencies and 0800 011 4193 for water emergencies
  • Make sure you’ve got a contingency plan with your healthcare provider for any medical equipment powered by electricity
  • Check on your neighbours if they might be particularly vulnerable in cold weather

It’s also worth taking the time to read our advice about what to do in a power cut or gas emergency.

Extra help for those who need it most

Ahead of the cold weather arriving, we proactively contacted our most vulnerable customers with tips and advice on preparing for winter.

We do this as part of a free service to provide extra communications to households who may particularly struggle without their electricity, gas or water supply during planned work or in an emergency.

There’s different reasons why you might benefit from joining our Priority Services Register. For example, you might have a health condition and rely on electricity to power medical equipment, you might have trouble communicating or you might have young children at home.

If you’re not already part of our Priority Services Register, it’s easy to join.

You can sign up for our Priority Services Register (PSR) by calling us on 0800 011 4193 or emailing us at netadmin@muagroup.co.uk with the following details:

  • Your name and contact details, including your mobile number
  • Your reason for registering so we can tailor our communications

If you know someone who could benefit from joining the PSR, please encourage them to get in touch with us or read more about the Priority Services Register.
